Surveying covers the basic principles of measuring and mapping land — base lines, offsets, conventional signs, true and magnetic bearings, and both open and closed traverses. Modern surveying equipment (Total Station, DGPS, LIDAR) has largely supplemented traditional chain-and-compass methods, but the underlying principles of levelling and theodolite survey remain foundational.

Key Equipment & Concepts
  • Level Lines — datum, bench marks, simple and fly levelling; longitudinal and cross-section contouring.
  • Theodolite Survey — measurement of horizontal/vertical angles, traversing by method of included angles, closing errors.
  • Modern equipment — Auto level, Total Station, DGPS, and LIDAR are now standard for railway alignment surveys.
