Indian Railways has committed to significant electrification and renewable-energy adoption (solar, wind, biomass) as part of its energy-efficiency and sustainability targets. AEE-level questions in this area test both efficiency concepts (energy audits, power factor) and awareness of railway renewable-energy initiatives.
Power Factor & Energy Efficiency
Power Factor
cos φ = Real Power (kW) / Apparent Power (kVA)
A low power factor means more current is drawn for the same real power delivered, increasing I²R losses and requiring larger cables/transformers. Capacitor banks are commonly used to improve (correct) power factor closer to unity.
- Solar power — rooftop solar on station buildings and workshops; also large ground-mounted plants feeding traction/non-traction loads.
- Wind power — utilized at select locations with favourable wind resource, feeding into the grid rather than direct traction supply.
- Energy audits — systematic review of energy consumption patterns to identify loss points and efficiency opportunities across depots/workshops.
