French National Railways (SNCF) demonstrated in 1955 that 25kV single-phase, 50Hz AC traction was superior to other systems. Indian Railways adopted it in 1957 in collaboration with SNCF, and now conducts electrification independently. India's first electric train ran BINA to KATNI (Central Railway) on 16.1.1995, on 2×25kV AC traction.

Catenary & Contact Wire — Real Specifications
- Catenary wire: 65 sq.mm cadmium copper, 19 strands of 2.10mm dia each, overall 10.5mm dia, about 80% conductivity.
- Contact wire: solid hard-drawn grooved electrolytic copper, 12.24mm dia, 107 sq.mm cross-section. Condemning size: 8.25mm.
- Both wires together carry 600 Amps total current-carrying capacity, kept at 1000 kg tension each — held constant via the Automatic Tensioning Device (ATD) at conductor terminations.
- Droppers: 5mm dia copper wire, spaced 9 metres apart, supporting the contact wire from the catenary via swivelling Cantilever bracket assembly.
Span, Masts & Portals
- OHE span varies from 27m to 72m, in steps of 4.5m. Maximum 72m span applies only on sections with wind pressure of 112.5 kg/m² or 75 kg/m² — span is reduced on curves based on degree of curvature.
- Steel masts: 4 types — BFB (Broad Flanged Beam), RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist), and fabricated rectangular-sectional K-type and B-type.
- Portals (for multi-track sections where independent masts don't fit): 3 types — N, O, R. P, G, and double-BFB uprights used where track separation is smaller.
- All masts and portals are galvanised before installation.
- 5 standard foundation types: Side Bearing, Side Gravity, New Pure Gravity, Wet Black Cotton Soil, and Dry Black Cotton Soil — chosen per local soil pressure and location.
Presag, Stagger & Overlap
- Presag: 100mm on the contact wire for the maximum 72m span, proportionately reduced for shorter spans — this 100mm presag with regulated OHE is considered suitable for 160 kmph operation.
- Stagger: the contact wire sweeps side-to-side as the pantograph glides, up to 200mm either side of the pan centreline on tangent (straight) track, 300mm on curved track (outer side) — this ensures even wear across the pantograph's wearing strips.
- OHE conductors are terminated every 1.5km, with overlap changeover normally spanning 3 spans.
- Uninsulated overlap: conductors kept 200mm apart, permanently jumper-connected for electrical continuity.
- Insulated overlap: conductors kept 500mm apart, bridged by interrupters/isolating switches (except at Neutral Section/SP, where it stays open).
Anticreep & Section Insulators
In regulated OHE, an anticreep point is installed at the midpoint of the tension length to ensure uniform distribution of mechanical tension along the conductor. Section Insulators separate the OHE of one track from another (e.g. at turnouts/crossovers) and separate secondary tracks/sidings from the main line. When a pantograph crosses from one track's OHE to another's, the overlap between runners prevents sparking during the changeover. Solid core porcelain insulators support the OHE as bracket/stay-arm insulators; 9-ton insulators are used specifically for termination points.
