Indian Railways employs various equipment in PSI & OHE to keep the 25kV AC single-phase, 50Hz traction supply system working efficiently. Significant numbers of PSI & OHE failures are due to component failure and lack of maintenance from non-availability of power block — modern condition-based maintenance (CBM) instruments are intended to reduce maintenance time, improve quality of work with least block time, and improve system reliability and availability.

Benefits of Condition Monitoring
  • Reduction of un-planned outage.
  • Predictable maintenance schedule.
  • Prevention of costly failure.
  • Minimize the severity of damages.
  • Increase the system stability.
  • Helps to plan future renovation.
  • Use of equipment for maximum economical efficiency.

The full range of equipment monitored under this CBM programme: Transformers, Circuit Breakers/Interrupters, Current Transformers, Surge Arresters, Relays, Electrical connections, Earth pits, Batteries, Cables, Machines, Contact wire, and Insulators.

Why Monitor Each Parameter — The Educational Rationale

Transformer Winding Resistance Meter

Winding Insulation Resistance Meter

Capacitance & Tan Delta Test Kit

ParameterRangeAccuracy
Capacitance1 pF – 1.1 µF (up to 2.6 µF with extension CT)±0.2% of reading ±1pF
Tan Delta0% – 100% (infinity)±1% of reading ±0.05%
Voltage measurement0 – 12 kV±1%, ±1 digit
Current measurement0 – 2000 mA±1%, ±1 digit
Power factor0.01% – 100%±1.0% of reading ±0.05%

Suitable for testing transformers, bushings, cables, insulators, switchgear, rotating machines, capacitors, and lightning arresters. Notably suitable for extraneous conditions in a 400kV switch yard under heavy induction — measurement can be taken at line frequency OR a fixed generated frequency, so output frequency stays independent of input frequency changes. Provides auto-balancing measurement and data logging with graph of voltage vs Tan Delta.

Transformer Turn Ratio Meter

Ratio RangeResolutionAccuracy
1 – 9.999 (ratio 10)0.001±0.2% for ratio 5 to 1000
10 – 99.99 (ratio 100)0.01±0.2% for ratio 5 to 1000
100 – 999.9 (ratio 1000)0.1±1.5% for ratio beyond 1000
1000 – 10000 (ratio 10000)1±1.5% for ratio beyond 1000
10000 – 14000 (ratio 14000)1±1.5% for ratio beyond 1000

Microprocessor-based, for automatic measurement of voltage/turn ratio, current, and phase displacement of power transformers, CTs, and PTs. Test voltage: 4.8V, 48V AC, or 110V AC on request. Fully protected against wrong connections, remote controllable, works in the presence of high interference/high voltage. Quickly indicates partial shorted turns and core faults from phase deviation of primary vs. secondary.

Transformer Oil Multiple Gas Extraction System (DGA)

M2 Fault Gas & Moisture Monitor (HYDRAN)

Oil Tan Delta Test Kit

Automatic Oil Break Down Voltage (BDV) Tester

Sweep Frequency Response Analyser (SFRA)

Detects internal MECHANICAL displacements without extended downtime — problems it can identify include: winding deformations/displacements, shorted turn/open winding, loosened or broken clamping structure, core connection problems, partial winding collapse, faulty core ground, core movements, and hoop buckling.

🎯
Exam Focus — Which Instrument Detects Which Kind of Fault
A useful way to organize these 9 transformer instruments: ELECTRICAL winding health → Winding Resistance Meter (DC resistance) and Turn Ratio Meter (ratio/phase deviation). INSULATION health → IR Meter, Tan Delta Kit (winding), Oil Tan Delta Kit and Oil BDV Tester (oil). CHEMICAL/gas-based early warning → DGA Extraction System (lab-based, sampled) and M2 Hydran Monitor (continuous, in-situ). MECHANICAL/structural integrity → SFRA (the only instrument here that detects physical deformation/displacement rather than an electrical or chemical parameter).
